Las Vegas has a brand new fixture, and it is not one that you would be able to find at the Party Casino online. For once, everyone is talking about the latest addition to the land-based casino industry, rather than the latest online innovation. It is all thanks to pop sensation Britney Spears, who has just begun her two-year residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, starting on 27 December in order to catch the New Year’s Eve crowds after a quieter launch in between Christmas and New Year which produced a sell-out show.
Reportedly, the audience were on their feet for the entire ninety minutes too, can sing along to performances of the thirty-two-year-old’s top hits from her career, which included such songs as Toxic and I’m A Slave 4 U. The crowd who were there to see the spectacle were mostly younger than the average Las Vegas crowd, and they enjoyed acrobatics, a ring of fire, confetti, and Britney herself frequently taking to the air. The singer, a previous Grammy winner, is going to perform fifty shows in 2014 and another fifty in 2015, in a 7000 seat theatre which has been shrunken to just 4500 seats for the duration of her performances. Dedicated fans might be a little bit disappointed to hear that she is really using a recording of her voice to add an electronically enhanced quality to her vocals and also to help her through some of the more physically gruelling part of the show when it would be difficult to sing, which led to some audience members complaining about the fact that they detected lip syncing. There were a collection of other pop stars attending the opening night, including current sensations Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus.
Britney Spears is one of the youngest stars to have settled down to performing on the Las Vegas strip, with residences there tending to be a form of semi-retirement. Other successful headliners who have performed on the strip in the past have included Celine Dion and Elton John, so she is certainly in good company and has a lot of precedents to follow. The theatre in which the show takes place is relatively intimate, decorated with nightclub touches including table and bottle service. Many of the shows have already sold out, and the tickets range from $59 to $179. If you want to see her perform her latest album, Britney Jean, which was released in December, then you will have to go to Las Vegas to see it – as she is not organising any other concert tours. This was her eighth album, with the previous seven going platinum plus, but it has so far received tepid reviews. Previous to this residency, Britney’s connection to Las Vegas was probably best remembered as the time when she got married to a childhood friend back in 2004, only to have the marriage annulled just fifty-five hours later. She was twenty-two years old at the time.
