The hearing before the US House Financial Services Committee, which was scheduled for April16, 2010 stands postponed to a later date. Barney Frank’s bill regulating online casinos and Internet gambling is still pending decision with the congress, and now seems would take a while longer to resolve. Barney and his team have been working tirelessly at overturning the UIGEA, and allow US residents to legally gamble online. These efforts have been on for a year now, but have missed several potential dates for advancement, as the congressional attention was directed more to health care and financial reform.
However Barney faces a June 1, 2010 deadline as the date marks the alarming implementation of the UIGEA. The Treasury has granted an appeal by a bipartisan Congressional group requesting the UIGEA online gambling ban, to be held back until such time Frank’s legislation could be considered. Barney Frank has succeeded in getting a number of co-sponsors to back his decision; however there is still a lot of work to be done before the aforesaid deadline, to ensure that the house hears their appeal favorably.
There is a ray of hope that the delay in implementation won’t be to long, as Senator Jon Kyl had responded to the UIGEA postponement, by declining to approve treasury job appointments, leaving the department to run extremely short staffed. He has now worked out a deal with treasury officials, to go ahead with the appointments so long as the date for the UIGEA is not shifted again. As their efforts pay off and Barney and his team are at the far end of finishing their assignment, its great hope for both Barney and the US residents by and large.
